A Day at Her Farm

I know we should have posted this way earlier than we are however better late than never. Her is what happens on a normal and maybe not so normal day at Her Farm.

Wake Up at 6:30am - this is if we are lucky and the power is on so that the fan is working and it blocks out all other sounds.

School 6:45am - 9:00am We sometimes get out earlier if all the kid focus on homework and get it done. Otherwise we are there with the stragglers and the daydreamers who take just a little more time then everyone else to finish their homework. We have found that these are usually the really smart kids and we just don't understand why they don't quickly finish and move to cooler things.

Breakfast - This consists of rice and curry. There is no photo of this as it is not a highlight in our day.

REST - Yes I do actually mean that everyone takes a rest before continuing on with anything else. At first I found this REALLY frustrating as I wanted to be up and doing things. I now find that either I take a nap like everyone else or I do scripture study.

English Class 11:30ish on - The women want to learn conversational English which is good other than they won't help us know what they already know and what they don't. And as we try to teach something either they say they know it or it's not that important. Just a bit frustrating but it helped us learn a bit of Nepali. Sometimes this turns into an art session which seamed to help with their English more than us actually teaching did.

Lunch - This is Keturah's favorite meal of the day. Our favorite lunch is top ramen noodles. It's so good. We sometimes get corn on the cob, or we have had another type of noodle dish that was ok. For that dish they bring out the tomato sauce (Ketchup) which if used makes everything taste better.

REST - Yes everyone once again takes another rest after lunch. This is the hottest time in the day so no one does any work. Keturah and I during this time have gone down to the school to finish setting it up.

Farm Work 3:00pm-5:00pm 'ish' - This is different every day so I'm just going to list a few of the things we have done so far. Corn husking, rice picking, moving the school from one place to the next, prepping meals, taking the kernels off the corn, filming (the women are working on photography and films for their website), painting, etc. It's basically anything that needs to be done.

Homework 5:00pm - 7:00pm - The kids get home from school and we work on homework. They come home with more homework then I ever had in college let alone elementary school. We do this outside on mats which is nice as its usually cooled off by that time.

Dinner 8:30pm - This consists of rice and curry. Keturah and I are on a very unique diet, 1/4 cup rice and 1/8 cup curry. The women fill their plates high with this rice and curry stuff for both dinner and breakfast. We just can't do it.

Dancing - Everyone gathers and music is played and we all dance. We thought they must only have one cd with one track on it because they play the same song over and over again. It's just because they like that song best. This last time we actually got a variety of different songs.

So there you a have it a not so very normal day at Her Farm.

  1. First off, 6:30????
Second, it sounds like you and Keturah are at the school just in the morning to teach English. Then the kids continue at school and you go and help with other stuff around the place. Then when they're done with school they come home to do homework. Is that right?
